“A goal without a timeline is just a dream.” – Robert Herjavec
A couple of weeks ago, I attended an industry event in Austin and one of the Key Note speakers was Robert Herjavec, known for his hit show Shark Tank and his run on Dancing with The Stars. Robert’s story is no different than many of yours, minus the hit TV show and the Ferrari. Like many of you, the entrepreneurs we work with or for every day and other successful people we read about, he risked a lot and worked hard every day.
He came from simpler roots: family was lower class, no high-end education, nor an entrepreneur mentor to learn from. He built his career like many of us, hard work and the commitment to never giving up.
During his presentation, he was asked how much luck was involved in his success and he proclaimed, “there is a great deal of luck in most stories of success”. At the same time, he recognized that “luck might be a factor but it must be accompanied with other factors”, timing and good ole sweat and tears were a few.
Robert experienced his fair share of challenges growing his success including the discovery he made one day that a trusted sales person was skimming clients and building his own firm without Robert’s knowledge. At the time he had a staff of only 12. When Robert fired his sales guy, he left taking 6 other employees with him. Robert suggested that to succeed, “we have to control the amount of time we feel sorry for ourselves and just get back on the horse and ride another day.”
Now, Robert owns a security services firm with over 350 employees and a Ferrari that goes zero to 60 mph in under 3 seconds. With my need for speed, I’d love to own a Ferrari someday but that’s just not in the cards for me any time soon. Apparently, ownership of one comes at some point after 30 employees, where we, at NetRes, sit today.
At the beginning of this year, I made a commitment to myself and my team that 2018 will be a winning year. Ending Q2 and starting Q3, we still have goals to accomplish to end the year strong but we’ve managed to have a lot of wins. What’s your win so far in 2018? Has your team hit their quarterly goals? Were you able to accomplish your goals? I’d love to connect and talk about your wins and hear areas I can be of assistance to you.
No matter the journey you are on in life, I hope you are journaling the struggles you overcome, the bumps in the roads and the successes you enjoyed! I wish you the best this summer and as Robert says, “never give up!”
